Today was officially weaning day for Pickles and Clementine, they have been preparing for this day for the last week. Being separated from moms during the day and put back together for the night. That allows a smoother transition for the whole herd, helping the cows slow their milk production and allowing the calves to rely more on grass or hay.
Weaning calves from their mothers is a pivotal farm milestone and can be a sensitive process. Although Pickles and Clementine took their relocation in stride. Only being relocated to a different pasture, one shared with our goat herd.
As the calves moved to live with the goats, emotions ran high. Integrating the calves into our goat community was a bold move initially met with skepticism. The goats have limited cattle experience, so it was a big day for them too. But as the day went on everyone realized the lack of threat that the calves had and began grazing closer. Come time for morning chores, were sure they'll be integrated just fine.
Weaning signifies growth and independence. Amidst initial turbulence, it fosters new connections and experiences. As the calves settle among the goats, they transition into their new lives as independent weanlings where they will begin halter training and preparing for new lives in their future homes.
